One of the most deadly volcanic eruptions of modern history was the eruption of Krakatoa in August, 1883. More than 36,000 people died. Krakatoa was dormant until May 20, 1883, when it erupted catastrophically. By August 11, three vents were regularly erupting on the volcano. It started with little eruptions and earthquakes, then they got bigger and bigger. On August 27, 1883 Krakatoa erupted and killed over half the people in Indonesia. Right after the eruption was over, there was a large tsunami that killed over 1,000 people.
